Why Should I Get a Minor?

Are you really into working with computers but your major doesn't allow you to? Do you want to learn to use a computer or design webpages effectively? Then a minor from the Computer Engineering & Computer Science Department is for you! In today's society, computer and Internet technology are becoming an increasingly important part of not only how we work but how we play. More and more we send emails instead of letters by post. Researching no longer means hours in the library stacks when there are Internet search engines at our fingertips. What's more, many majors outside of our department do not adequately prepare students for the changing technological environment. The minors we offer are designed for non-Computer Engineering/Science majors who want to round out their degrees and better prepare themselves for the future.

Great New Opportunities for CSULB Students

The Computer Engineering & Computer Science Department has developed some curriculum to reach out to many students on our campus in other majors. We have two new minors that we think will enhance the resumé of any major outside the department.

First is a Minor in Computer Science Applications, which will prepare students to be able to write small programs in three computer languages, maintain and upgrade PC software and hardware, and understand how to set up a local area network. In addition it prepares students to be able to design and implement web applications.

Second is a Minor in Web and Technology Literacy, which focuses on developing internet and web authoring skills with a broad understanding of technology.

We have also developed a certificate for those who already have a bachelor's degree. The Certificate in Web & Technology Literacy will provide valuable technical skills for a variety of fields including graphic arts, teaching, journalism, law, business and public administration, social work and many others.

Our department has excellent faculty and labs, and we are very enthusiastic about this additional role for us at The Beach.
