CECS-323: Database Projects
Students are assigned to groups at approximately the midpoint of the semester and are assigned to work on a database project. This page contains a description of past database projects assigned.
Projects proposed by students
Starting with the Fall 2007 semester, each group of students proposed a project to do. The proposals were submitted and approved by me. Here is a list of the approved project proposals from Fall 2007.
- NY City Mass Transit: A database to maintain information about the different public transportation lines available in New York City. A person could use it to find different ways to travel between two points.
- Hospital Management: This project's goal was to maintain all information that would be generated by the visit of a patient to a hospital. This was to include doctors, patients, diagnosis, examinations done, etc.
- Music Recording Label: A database to be used by a small independent music label; it keeps track of the artists signed under the label, the albums recorded by them, and also the cost and revenue figures associated with the making of albums, videos, and of the tours that artists perform on.
- NBA Fantasy League: In a fantasy league, participants need the statistics of every NBA player in order to determine the player's value. To determine the statistics, this database keeps track of all players, their teams and coaches, and the games played between them. For each game played, the database allows one to record the performance of a player (e.g.: points scored, rebounds obtained, etc.).
- Package Routing: A shipping company needs to know routing information across its network of warehouses. This database allows one to track a package as it makes its way from the person who shipped it to the recipient. As the package is shipped, it may arrive and depart from different transfer poitns.
- Department of Motor Vehicles: Car owners are required to register their vehicle with the DMV. This database records information about the cars, the owners of such cars, the different code violations that a driver could be cited for, etc.
List of projects assigned by Dr. Monge
- Spring-2007: Galaxy News -- a database of newspapers, articles, reporters, etc.
- Fall-2006: SuperDB -- a database of superheores, their backgrounds and relationships as found in comic books, inspired by the movies "The Incredibles".
- Fall-2005: TV411 -- a database of television programming.
- Fall-2004: Vote4Change -- a database to maintain information about the voting process that was taking place during the 2004 Presidential Elections.
- Fall-2003: Confer -- a database to be used by professional conference organizers. Conferences like the ACM SIGMOD Conferences, are organized in an annual basis. Researchers submit papers about their results and the conference organizers make arrangements to have other researchers revies the submitted papers. This peer-review process is needed as there are many papers submitted and only the best reviewed papers are accepted in a conference.
