Homework 4 -- "Dataveillance"

Latest Update: Sat 23 Jan 99

Obtain a copy of the actual data that some organization (government or business) maintains on you. (Note: although this should not take a lot of time, you may have to start early -- for example, to write a letter asking for the information.) Write a brief but careful discussion that tells us:

    • what the data means ...
    • how the organization obtained the data ...
    • what they are doing with it ...
    • how correct or incorrect it is ...
    • how difficult it was for you to obtain it ...
    • how it affects your life for them to have it.

Anchor your discussion and analysis in at least two readings on the topic -- either what we've discussed in class, or (better) outside sources that you've found.

While you are working on this, you might get some good ideas by checking out the newsgroup comp.society.privacy.

Do not turn in any actual data on yourself or anyone else -- I do not want to know your actual bank balance, driving record, etc.!
