Lab #1

Solutions to the problems below are due via e-mail, please submit your solutions no later than Monday at 1pm. Write your solutions to these problems in a word processor like MS Word and then send me the file via an attachment.

Problems

  1. Based on problem 1.6 in the book: every profession uses computers today. Use a Web browser and a search engine like Google to find sites that relate Computer Science (or Computing or Computation) to a second field (e.g. Biology, Physics, Business) of interest. If your major is not computer science, then you should relate CS to your major. Write a half-page paragraph about what you find especially interesting regarding the connection of CS to the field you chose. This paragraph must be written in your own words!
  2. Go to http://www.howstuffworks.com and find out how one of the following works and write a half-page paragraph about what you read. This paragraph must be written in your own words!
    1. Digital Camera
    2. Blue screen (or green screen) from the movie industry
    3. Computer Processor

This will be one of the problems in Lab #2 -- you can get started if you like. Do not submit a solution with your solution to Lab #1 as it will not be graded.

  1. Write your first name using ASCII codes and then convert each of the ASCII codes into their binary representation.
